The
Village of Enosburg Falls
Background:
Incorporated
in 1886, the Village of Enosburg Falls is a classical, quaint New England
Village occupying 3.6 square miles of land in the center of a town chartered to
General Roger Enos by Revolutionary War hero, Ethan Allen. Situated between the
Green Mountains and the upper Champlain Valley on the east and west,
respectively, just 5 miles south of the Canadian border, the Village offers
breathtaking scenery in each of our four distinct seasons. Bisecting the
Village is the Missisquoi River, its source the bubbling fresh water springs of
the Green Mountains, its destination, Lake Champlain. The towns and communities
surrounding the Village comprise one of the largest dairy centers in Vermont,
the largest dairy producing state in the Northeast. The Village itself serves
the retail, financial and social needs of these rural and farm families. Known
as the "Dairy Center of the World," agriculture is truly the grassroots of the
community. The Village is the physical host of the annual Vermont State Dairy
Festival. This state celebration of agriculture, draws a crowd nearly fifteen
times greater than the Village population during its four day stay. Passed down
through generations, family farms are defining, yet badly declining,
characteristics of the community. Of the once robust mills and factories that
called Enosburg home, only one manufacturer, Franklin County Cheese Corporation,
remains. Franklin County Cheese, producer of cream cheese and spreads, is one of
the largest purchasers of local milk and employs 80 people.
As
agriculture and the industrial base have declined over the years, skilled
workers have been forced to seek employment elsewhere. As an educational
center to the region, the Village hosts the Town Elementary School, the
Enosburg Falls High School, which accepts tuition students from five
surrounding communities, and the Cold Hollow Career Center. The Career
Center is a regional vocational center with programs in business,
agriculture, building trades and marketing. As a result of the lack of
employment opportunities, most graduates of these programs seek a future far
from their roots.
Community
Profile:
The existing Industrial Park offers nine (9) lots, with sizes ranging from
1.91 acres to 5.95 acres, for sale. Two of the original eleven lots were
purchased and will be home to Vaillancourt Transport, a milk hauling
company. Enosburg is the only Vermont Park approved to use the Vermont
Agriculture Quality Seal.
Development Goal:
"To develop and construct a municipal business and industrial center with
in-place infrastructure which will attract new business and industry in
order to":
1. Employ "un" and "under" employed workers
2. Provide job opportunities for the graduates of the local school system
3. Stabilize municipal tax and utility rates
